The first week's class focused on the basic rules of the game of Chess. A one-page handout (compiled by the U.S. Chess Federation) was distributed in class as reference material. A copy of that handout can be found here.

The internet is replete with hundreds and hundreds of videos on chess. Here are links to three of the better 'rules of chess' YouTube videos I have seen.

How to Play Chess This one is the shortest of the three. It is competently done and covers the basics of the game.
How to Play Chess This one is rather longer. But it's professionally done. And while it's aimed at 'kids' we're all just big kids at heart.
How to Play Chess Gotham Chess has a LOT of videos out there. This one starts with the rules but goes beyond them into basic strategies and tactics.
